Location:
Anyone travelling in Scotland will pass through Crianlarich at some stage, as it lies at the junction of two of the main roads from the lowlands to the north-west highlands. Crianlarich and Ben More, which stands at 1174m, to the east of the village, is the largest 'Munro' in the area. The name Crianlarich is derived from the Gaelic for 'low pass', or, if you prefer another derivation, it is the 'site of the Aspen', a tree related to the Maple. In the 1750s two military roads met here. One came from Stirling via Callander and approached Crianlarich from the east, along Glen Dochart. The other started in Dumbarton and approached from the south, along the banks of Loch Lomond and Glen Falloch. While on holiday in the Crianlarich and Tyndrum areas, you will, no doubt, visit such places as Loch Lomond, Glen Dochart or Loch Tay, to take pictures, enjoy a picnic, breath in the fresh air and the tranquillity of it all. but it was not always so peaceful! Neighbouring landowners squabbled, warriors clashed swords and bandits rustled cattle. History and legend abounds and this is not easily told in a few paragraphs - come and stay with us if you want to find out more.
