Bernard Baliol's 12th century fortress, which gave the town its name, Barnard Castle. Barnard Castle is a working market town and has a flourishing market held on 'the cobbles' in Market Place every Wednesday, the main weekday market is also supplemented with an occasional Saturday farmers market. A typical market town shopping area rich in antique and craft shops. Excellent restaurants. A magnificent castle sits just behind the main street.
