Location: Close to the Dorset/Wiltshire border, Shaftesbury is halfway between Somerset and Hampshire. Rising more than 200m above the Blackmore Vale at its Northern end, it is the highest town in Dorset and one of the oldest in England. From Cream Teas to Legends, Prehistoric Sites to Nature Reserves, Literary History to Country Crafts, the Blackmore vale and the surrounding countryside offer so many options. Sherborne, Yeovil and Blandford Forum are all just a short drive away. Travel a little further and Longleat, Poole, Dorchester, Glastonbury or Salisbury await. National Trust properties at Stourhead, Kingston Lacy, Corfe Castle, and Hardys Cottage, amongst others, are all within easy reach. There are museums at Bovington (Tanks), Yeovilton (Aircraft) and Sparkford (Haynes Motor Museum). Dorset is a county of beautiful gardens including those at Abbotsbury, Athelhampton, Hadspen and Lytes Cary. Chesil Beach, Weymouth, Swanage, Lyme Regis and Lulworth Cove are accessible for those who love the sea and there is a mainline railway station only ten minutes drive away at Gillingham.
