Description: West Prawle House, rebuilt after a fire at the end of the 19th Century, still contains parts of the original farm house which was the only dwelling in East Portlemouth parish to have been listed in the Domesday Book. With far-reaching views inland towards Dartmoor, we nestle at the head of a valley, below the worst of the prevailing winds . We are within half a mile of the inspiring South Hams coastline and coastal path, midway between East Portlemouth and East Prawle, the southernmost village in Devon. Our grounds, which are open to our guests, include a part of West Prawle valley with a small lake, with Gipsy caravan and barbeque area, Our small flock of the "at risk" Grey-faced Dartmoor sheep share the grounds with horses, chickens and ducks. Our Accommodation: We have two letting suites, each comprising a double bedroom, sitting-room and shower-room. Both suites have French windows leading on to the wide veranda which runs the length of the house and where on summer mornings we can serve your breakfast. The sitting-rooms have fold down beds to give additional sleeping accommodation if required. The Family suite has bunks. There is a TV and tea-making facilities in each suite, as well as a small fridge and microwave and we are happy to provide accommodation for children and most pets (by arrangement). We have a travel cot but we do not provide any bedding for this. Breakfasts can be served in our farmhouse kitchen, the dining-room or on the veranda when the weather allows. A high chair is available. The dining-room also features a ¾ size snooker table which can be made available to guests. At the side of the lake there is a gipsy caravan or "vargo" and charcoal barbeque, arrangements can be made for guests to use these and on balmy romantic summer nights even sleep in the vargo! Youngsters sometimes like to help with the animals and always love collecting their own eggs for breakfast. Additionally our shetland pony, Huckle, likes a bit of pampering and in exchange will allow himself to be ridden (under supervision). Location: West Prawle and its surrounds:- West Prawle is a tiny hamlet of some 6 properties and lies 200 yards off the East Portlemouth road, mid way between East Prawle and East Portlemouth. East Portlemouth features some of the best family beaches in the South Hams and there is a small pedestrian ferry which provides transport to Salcombe where there are numerous restaurants and pubs, not to mention the shopping! Salcombe harbour is at the head of the Kingsbridge estuary; Kingsbridge itself has very good shopping facilities and has a weekly farmers market. Our nearest village is East Prawle which lies just inland of the notorious wreckers paradise of Prawle Point and has two Pubs; the Pigs Nose, with its real ale and bar food and which is becoming famous for its live music, and The Providence Inn a 16th century village pub which also serves real ale and provides excellent evening meals. A drive of about 10 mins will take you to the lovely village of Southpool, the Millbrook Inn there also serves fine foods! Further a-field are the Cricket Inn at Beesands, the Tradesman Arms and Church House at Stokenham and, famous for its fish & chips, the Start Bay Inn at Torcross. Salcombe of course is a sailors paradise with craft of all types and sizes including the famous Salcombe yawls. Apart from the wonderful local beaches, there are many attractions in the locality for children of all ages, these include Sorley Tunnel, Woodlands, Pennywell Farm, and a host of others. You can also find out about our weather by visiting Andy and Lindsey's site www.rickham.net . Slightly further afield are the National Maritime Museum in Plymouth and the recently opened Torbay Aquarium. |
