Bongate House offers quality bed and breakfast accommodation in a fine Georgian House on the outskirts of the attractive town of Appleby-in-Westmorland. The house has extensive gardens with fine views over the River Eden and Appleby Castle.
Bongate House was built about 1760, in the style of many large farmhouses of that period. Over the years it has been extended, until now it is quite a sizeable property. We have nine bedrooms, comprising a mixture of double-bedded, twin bedded and single-bedded rooms, five of which are en-suite. They are all pleasantly decorated, and have colour television and tea/coffee making facilities. In addition, some rooms can accommodate families.
Breakfast is served in the dining room, and is prepared from locally purchased produce; the sausages are made in town to a secret recipe by our butcher's wife.
We of course can cater for any diet. There is a resident's lounge where you can sit to read, or write letters home telling of your wonderful holiday. We have about one acre garden for your enjoyment and to wander around at your leisure. Walk between the ancient box hedges to the raised goldfish pond and the patios, sit on the patios and enjoy the sun,or stroll down to the end of the garden and talk to the goats and enjoy fine views of Appleby Castle and the River Eden.
Whatever you decide to do just relax and enjoy the magic which is Bongate House.
If walking is your interest then we can advise on any amount of different types to suit you, ranging from lowland river to hill or fell. You can if you wish reach 3000ft (914m) with relative ease.
Fishing is free on the river Eden 'Town water', but if you would like more scope we can arrange this. You can also contact John Pape direct for details of his excellent beats on the river and also his private lake.
Other local attractions worth a look are Bongate Mill and Art Gallery situated on the riverside adjacent to the recently restored weir, and the Courtyard Gallery in town. Both can be visited on a circular walk that you can do from our house. If you are interested in Golf then Appleby Golf Club is the place to go: Tel: 017683 51432
