Ayrshire: is a county on the west coast of Scotland, on the shores of the Firth of Clyde. Ayrshire, birthplace of Robert Burns, one of Scotland's most celebrated sons, even after his death over 200 years ago thousands still celebrate Burns Night with the traditional supper of haggis, neeps and tatties. Royal Troon Golf Course was founded in 1878 and designed by one of the greatest of the early British golfers, Willie Fernie. Playing a key role in Scottish history, it has castles and monuments dating back centuries and a range of visitor attractions to keep all the family entertained. There are over 40 castles throughout Ayrshire, many of which can be visited. There are also three islands to be explored lying just off the Ayrshire coast including Cumbrae, Arran and Ailsa Craig which is now a bird sanctuary.
